Maracuja. Sweet and sour, purple or yellow, and when it blooms it inspires unprecedented admiration. Maracuja, also known as passion fruit, is a popular fruit grown mainly in Indonesia, Australia, Africa and South America, where it was discovered by missionaries in the 17th century. In the past it was considered a symbol of Christ's passion due to its appearance, as its flower resembles a crown of thorns. According to legend, the whole plant is a representation of Christ's crucifixion, and its Czech name, passion fruit, also refers to this. The hard skin of the fruit hides a tasty sweet and sour yellow-orange flesh with seeds.
