Description
What you may not have known about apricots
The Latin name Prunus armeniaca probably refers to the Armenian origin of the apricot. According to tradition, the philosopher Confucius taught his students under an “apricot altar” because he believed that apricots promote the development of wisdom and knowledge. Some historians even identify the “golden apples” from Greek mythology with apricots. They were supposed to grow in the garden of the gods and obtaining them was one of Hercules’ twelve legendary labors. Historian Jacques Le Goff exaggeratedly noted that “the only positive benefit of the Crusades was the import of apricots”. Thanks to this, this delicate crop was able to spread to Central Europe. The deep orange fruit with a typical red cheek and a refreshing, aromatic taste is now best grown in Moravia, where apricots are known as marhole. And thanks to the Apollo astronauts, they even looked at the moon.
